FROM FIELD TO FEELING

When we first set out to provide better quality home linens, we knew we had to start with the best quality fabric. Soft, durable and absorbent. The cotton is derived from a plant and yes in Egypt they still use traditional handpicking.

While most of the world’s cotton is machine harvested, Egypt has decidedly remained devoted to delicate handpicking. Hundreds of years of experience passed down by generations make this precise work a possible undertaking.

Handpicking the cotton makes for a purer end product. This means there are less leaves, branches and seeds getting in the way of softness.

But what, exactly makes Egyptian Cotton the supreme cotton? There are many types of cotton out there, each with uniquely remarkable qualities. Here is why we decided to journey to the Motherland of cotton.

Satisfyingly Luxurious.

Egyptian Cotton is world-renowned for its supernatural characteristics, it has become a byword for luxury. The extra long staple fibers have a higher resistance and high absorbency rate coupled with the breathability of a hammock in the wind. Being naturally remarkably soft, this cotton is perfect for towels (and bed sheets, and pillowcases and robes and the list goes on). The luxurious feel of Egyptian cotton is why it is still the number one choice for five-star hotels and spas.

The list of natural benefits doesn’t end there. This cotton grows better with age; no matter how many times you wash it. Pure cotton is naturally odor-resistant and machine-washable meaning it is extremely durable, so you can rest assured that your investment will keep you dry for a very long time to come.

What makes it so great?

Its something about the soil it grows in. The Nile delta offers the most fertile land for the crop. Coupled with the unique climate of Egypt this cotton has evolved to have extraordinary qualities.

Thanks to the river Nile the cotton is never without supply of water, which helps the cotton grow longer individual fibers. Longer fibers make it possible to make the finest of yarns without sacrificing the strength of the yarn

The Tricky Part.

If you're trying to get your hands on some quality home linens your mission might be harder than expected. The “100% Egyptian Cotton” label is one of the most ubiquitous in textiles. This certainly muddies the waters.

Due to disruptive government intervention and a rocky political standing, production of authentic long staple Egyptian cotton has been rapidly declining. Egypt went from producing 10% of the worlds total cotton in 1969 to reaching a record low of 38,102 tonnes in 2016.

Production has been going down in excess of 10% a year in the last two decades alone.

If Egyptian cotton accounts for only 0.5% of all cotton production, why do we continue to see that 100% Egyptian Cotton label everywhere?

Its pretty obvious, actually. The fact that it is becoming a rare commodity is encouraging suppliers and manufacturers to resort to fraudulent labeling. This in turn is hurting production of the real stuff and most of all the farmers who harvest it.

At Casamera we believe that better basics should come from quality materials. 100% of our products are ethically-made 100% long staple Egyptian Cotton.

By supporting a local community of farmers and testing the cotton used in our towels, we can indisputably say that the material used in our lustrous towels is among the purest out there. The whole process happens in the fertile soil of the Nile delta. The cotton is harvested, hand-picked and weaved all in Egypt then shipped straight to you

Every product that makes it from us to you brings us closer to building a stronger more independent community for Egyptian cotton farmers.
